Aidslinks publications and projects
Welcome to AIDSlinks
The University of Pretoria (UP) established the Centre for the Study of AIDS (CSA) in 1999 to mainstream HIV/AIDS through all aspects of University's core business activities. Its mission was to understand the complexities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa and to develop effective ways of ensuring that all the students and staff of the University are prepared both professionally and personally to deal with HIV and AIDS as it unfolds in South African society.
The CSA wishes to introduce this online database for HIV researchers and interested parties. The aim of this initiative is for the CSA to deliver on its mandate to expand on research programmes by creating linkages between researchers within the HIV arena and consequently encourage and support increased multi-disciplinary HIV research.

Collaborative Projects
Humanties
John Hopkins University (School of Public Health) and University of Pretoria Project
- Title: Neurobehavioural risk Factors of Contracting HIV among drug users in South Africa
- Sponsoring Agency: National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
- Started: May 2003 – to date
- Co-ordinator: Ms Anne Moleko
- Purpose: The research study looks at the abilities, attitudes and behaviours that may increase the chance that a young person who uses drugs will become infected with Human Immuno-Defiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes Acquired Immunie Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The information from the research will be used to derive a culturally appropriate South African version of an HIV risk behaviour interview and cognitive tests that may contribute to developing interventions that may reduce drug and HIV in South Africa amongst young people.
Florida International University and University of Pretoria Project
- Title: Development of a Culturally Sensentive HIV Risk Reduction Intervention for South African Youths
- Sponsoring Agency: National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
- Started: May 2004 to 31 November 2006
- Coordinator: Ms Anne Moleko
- Purpose: The study was a pilot that endeavoured to:
- adapt and pilot-test a theory-based HIV risk reduction intervention for use among male and female adolescents aged 14-17 residing in Pretoria, South Africa by adapting an intervention developed in the US;
- assess risk and protective behaviors, intentions, perceptions, knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS among 80 adolescents aged 14-17 and their parents;
- train a local research team who will maintain research capacity in conducting behavioural intervention that can prevent the spread of HIV and to acquire knowledge from this experience that could be helpful as well to our understanding and prevention of drug abuse in the US.

Yale University and University of Pretoria
- Title: Serithi Project
- Sponsoring Agency: Yale University
- Started: February 2003 - to date
- Coordinator: Prof Maretha Visser
- Purpose: The Serithi project is done as a collaborative effort between the University of Pretoria and Yale University with Prof Bridget Jeffrey as principles investigator. The Departments of Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychology and Sociology and the MRC Unit for Maternal and Infant Care Strategies are involved in the research. The project is sponsored by the National Institute of Health under the title: Building capacity for HIV and AIDS Research in South Africa. The focus of the five-year project is on studying a cohort of HIV+ women diagnosed during pregnancy from being diagnosed until the child is three years old. In this cohort of women the focus is on disease progression, aspects of nutrition, the psychological impact of diagnosis and the experience of and reaction to stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Data gained from studying the cohort of women was used in the development of an intervention to assist women to cope with their diagnosis and to assist them in prolonging their life expectation. Support groups for HIV+ women are implemented in two communities Atteridgeville and Mamelodi. To date 104 HIV+ pregnant women joined the support groups. The impact of the support group on the well-being of women is being investigated.
NGOs and University of Pretoria Project
- Title: Training to Deal with HIV/AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children
- Sponsoring Agency: None
- Starting date: February 2007 – to date
- Implemented by: MA Counselling students.
- Purpose: This project is a collaborative effort between the Department of Psychology and the Department of Health and is implemented by the collaborative effort between the Department of Psychology and two NGOs: Head Start (focusing on early childhood development) and Heart Beat (taking care of HIV/AIDS orphans). The goal of the project is to develop a training programme for preschool child minders to look after the specific needs of children orphaned or affected by HIV/AIDS as part of the training programmes of Head Start. The project will be done as an action research approach. The students will do a needs assessment among child minders, study the available material and develop a programme to train child minders. They will implement the training programme in a small group of child minders, adjust the programme to address the needs and add the programme as part of the training package of Head Start.
